Some of the things we learned about here in Finland, where the Moomins. They are comic characters created by Tove Jansson and are a combination of hippo and troll. They life somewhere in Finland in the Moominvalley in a lighthouse or a theater. There are comics, books and movies about them and when you walk the streets in Turku you see some sort of Moomin merchandise on every corner. The were first published in Swedish, because Tove Jansson is a Swedish speaking Fin. The original comic and books were published between 1945 and 1993 and many other things, like a TV series followed. Close to Turku in Naantali there is a theme park only about the Moomin, it is located on an island which is reachable by bridge. When we were in Naantali it was already closed so we couldn't go. In general I think the park is not very interesting for children over 12 years of age, because there are no roller coasters or more action related stuff. You can just meet the Moomins and look at their house and watch some live shows. Children under 12 will most certainly be thrilled to go there and meet the Characters, I think.
The official animal of Finland is the Whooper swan but to be honest I think they should declare the Moomin as their official animal. They are most certainly more present then the swan.
