Learning by doing

The most used learning method in Finland is the "learning by doing" method. The student gets a project, case study or  something similar and has to find a the best way to solve it and get the best possible solution out of the exercise. I had two courses with just the learning by doing method and one course where the method was combined with the usual lecture style. In one of the only learning by doing courses, we had to solve three different case studies in a time frame of each 2-3 weeks and had to finish with a presentation. The other one had a individual task, where we had to write 8-10 pages about doing business in the country of our choice and we had to do a reading circuit, where we read a book about the culture theme, which the course was about. The course where both were combined had lectures every week and we had to do two assignments in a group.

With this method the students have to adapt and learn from mistakes they might made, they have to interact with their environment and need to work independently without the guidance of a teacher or professor. John Dewey was the philosopher who first implemented the method of learning by doing.

„If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.“ - John Dewey

I personally think it is a very interesting way of studying and should be introduced to more universities. Especially pupils who have a hard time to learn things by hard or who have exam nerves it would be a great way to help them through university.
