Glögi, is a mulled wine, which the Fins drink during the Christmas season. They sell it as bottles in the supermarket and offer it at the Christmas market. It is very delicious and when you don't drink alcohol like me, there is also a alcohol free version in the supermarket available, but trust me a little Glögi is always okay, even with alcohol. The difference between regular mulled wine, like the "Glühwein" I know from home, is the addition of currant juice. There are also different names for it in the Nordic countries, in Denmark and in Norway it is called Gløgg and in Sweden it is called Glögg.
Here is a recipe which I want to try at home:
- 2 l Red wine (semi dry)
- 200 ml currant juice
- 10 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 200 g sugar (I think I would put less, but we will see)
- 1/2 lemon
- 100 g pealed almonds
- 100 g raisins
You put the red wine, currant juice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, the sugar and the half lemon inside a pot and let it heat up, but not boil. It is best when the mixture sits for one night. Then you can strain the liquid into a cup and add the almonds and raisins if you want.
